Music Week 2024 Recap

Music Week 2024 Recap

Happy New Year - I hope you all enjoyed (our 7th annual) Music Week 2024! I have a blast doing this every year and I think the new format worked pretty well. We had the biggest participation and most songs we’ve ever had, so thank you all for joining me!

I’ve (once again) adjusted how we score. Just to make sure that I’m never able to go back and compare year-to-year.

Firstly – I’ve reviewed songs and albums separately from each other. Previously I gave a weighted score based on albums, songs, and features to rank artists overall. With half the crew including albums and half not, it just makes more sense to not do that. The “scoring” is also a little dubious, so this year I just counted albums, songs, & features separately. “Tally/tallies” refers to how many times the album, song, etc. was included on a list.

Here’s a link to the master Excel file of all our songs and playlists this year.

Favorite Songs

Rank Tally Song Artist
1 (tie) 3 Good Luck, Babe! Chappell Roan
1 (tie) 3 Linger Royal Otis
1 (tie) 3 Sticky (feat. GloRilla, Sexxy Red, & Lil Wayne) Tyler, The Creator

We had 3 songs that received 3 tallies – which after a quick check back I don’t think has ever happened. 3 tallies are also the most any song has ever gotten in Music Week.

After these, we had 18 songs that had 2 tallies. The remaining 294 were included just once.

Our playlists included 339 total songs – 315 unique. That’s over 100 more songs than 2022 (198 songs). Our songs came from 247 different artists on 285 albums (or singles).

Favorite Albums

Rank Tally Album Artist
1 3 brat Charli xcx
5 (tie) 2 Big Ideas Remi Wolf
5 (tie) 2 Short n' Sweet Sabrina Carpenter
5 (tie) 2 This Wasn't Meant For You Anyway Lola Young
5 (tie) 2 Tigers Blood Waxahatchee

I don’t believe we’ve ever had an album receive 3 tallies either. 2 has been common though and is usually enough to claim the top spot.

Overall artists-wise, Charli xcx was fairly dominate. She had 7 individual songs between “brat” & “brat and it’s completely different but also still brat” – “Sympathy is a knife,” was listed twice (GM & TM) for a total of 8 song tallies. She was listed on 5 playlists total. Again – she also had the fave album with 3 people including “brat”.

After that, Zach Bryan came in second with 6 individual songs (6 song tallies). Waxahatchee had 4 songs (5 song tallies) and Lola Young also had 4 songs (4 song tallies).

Several artists technically had multiple features, but they often came with the same artist or were listed that way on a collab album. For example, Metro Boomin was listed as a feature on all songs from “WE DON’T TRUST YOU” & “WE STILL DON’T TRUST YOU,” but it’s a collab album with Future. Similar with Sturgill Simpson and Johnny Blue Skies on “Passage Du Desir.” Tame Impala had 2 features on the Justice album – though not a collab album.

The one artist who had multiple features with multiple artists was Kacey Musgraves on “She Calls Me Back,” by Noah Kahan (EM) & “I Remember Everything,” by Zach Bryan (MV). Kacey also had 2 of her own songs listed from Deeper Well (FG & SS).

Other Stuff

In 2022 we had three artists remaining who had been listed every year since we began in 2018: Freddie Gibbs, The Weeknd, & Young Thug. They were all included again this year, but I went back to 2023 to double check and neither Fredrick nor Abel made the lists last year.

Which leaves the icon (and recently free, but not in Atlanta) Mr. Jeffery “Young Thug” Williams as the only artist to be included in every Music Week ever.

AH & CS had entirely unique playlists to everyone else.

MV had the most overlap on her playlist & most of that overlap was with JV. She shared 13 songs total and 7 were with JV. She also overlapped with the most people (FG, GM, JV, SS, TM, & WH)

GM the highest tempo (on average) playlist at 131 bpm. WH had the slowest at 112 bpm. Overall average was a solid 121 bpm – which was exactly the average tempo for EM’s playlist.

Fastest song was “Something-Anything,” by Pretoria (CS – 194 bpm). Slowest was “i wish i hated you,” by Ariana Grande (JV – 65 bpm)

TM had the most explicit playlist (18 songs). WH had the least (2 songs)

The oldest song was “Love Supreme,” by T-Connection (AH – released 1978). The newest was “Lace It (with Eminem & benny blanco),” by Juice WRLD (JV – released 11/30/2024).

Shortest song was “Cerca De Ti,” by Hermanos Gutiérrez (AH – 1:48) and the longest was “GAS 3 – 1996,” by GAS (FG – 14:28).

Here are the Spotify playlists I was recommended for each of your curated lists, in case you’re looking for more similar music.
